Verlie Mae Hooker Simpson, 97, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Valdosta, GA, on March 11, 1929. She was a woman of strong faith and was a member of New Harvest Methodist Church.
Verlie Mae loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending time visiting with family and friends, attending church, and cooking. Throughout her life, she worked at several places, including McCrory’s and Brock Candy Facility. She retired from Dowling Bag and later from Drumheller’s.
She found joy in life’s simple moments, especially cooking and spending time with her family. The love and memories she shared with them will be cherished by her family for generations to come.
Verlie Mae is survived by her children, Pam Sale, John Simpson, III, and Mary “Kay” Simpson; sister-in-law, Nadine Boyd; grandchildren, Graham Sale (Aron), Michael Sale (Andi), Adam Simpson, Jennifer Bozeman (Chris), John Simpson, IV (Ashley), Katie Temples, Megan Temples (DJ), Shawn Simpson (Emily), and Tiffany Ortlieb (Dusty); 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Simpson, Jr.; parents, Katie Mae Pittman Hooker and Olin Cleo Hooker; sons, Paul Simpson and Mark Simpson; son-in-law, Thaxton Sale, Jr.; grandson, William Ashley Sale; and all of her siblings.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home, with Benjamin Hasty and Larry Hauser officiating. Burial will follow at Lake Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 until 11 a.m.
