Thompson Kurrie, Jr. passed away on June 29, 2026, in Valdosta, Georgia surrounded by his family. Tom was a loving husband, father and grandfather as well as a trusted attorney and loyal friend.

Tom was born December 21, 1948, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Thompson Kurrie and Emily Pearson Kurrie. He attended Pine Crest Preparatory School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was a member of the golf team and his lifelong love of the game began. Tom received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Emory University in 1970, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta and served as the chapter president his senior year. He received a Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University in 1973 and a Juris Doctor from Emory University School of Law in 1976. He was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1976 and became a Certified Public Accountant the following year.

Tom began his distinguished career at Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in Atlanta, Georgia. He moved with his family to Valdosta in 1983, where he was an Assistant Professor of Accounting and Taxation at Valdosta State University and then Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of Griffin Corporation before joining Coleman Talley LLP in 1986.

During his nearly forty-year career at Coleman Talley, Tom became one of the central figures in the law firm’s growth. He served as Managing Partner for many years, helping guide the firm through strategic expansion, and he played a leading role in opening its Atlanta office in 2005. Tom represented developers, financial institutions, municipalities, housing authorities, businesses and individuals throughout the southeast. He specialized in taxation, affordable housing development, commercial real estate development, municipal law, banking and finance, and complex business transactions. He served for many years as counsel to Park Avenue Bank and chaired the Georgia Bankers Association Bank Counsel Section in 1996. A fourth-generation lawyer, Tom loved the practice of law and truly treasured the relationships he formed with clients and co-workers, some of which spanned the length of his career. He was a trusted confidant and mentor, and there was no legal problem or challenge he felt insurmountable.

Tom was a dedicated member of the Valdosta community. He served on the board of directors of various community organizations that he found meaningful and important, including the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce as its Chairman in 1995, and most recently the Valdosta Housing Authority. He was a member of the Park Avenue Church and a Sunday School teacher for the Grace Dennis class for several years. He was an avid golfer and found great joy in the game and his beloved golf group. He was a member of the Valdosta Country Club as well as a 40-year Life member of the Capital City Club in Atlanta. He greatly enjoyed and appreciated the countless lunches and outings with friends over the past few years.

Tom was predeceased by his parents, Thompson Kurrie and Emily Pearson Kurrie; his sister, Emily Kurrie Youngblood; his father-in-law, Joe Parker; and his daughter, Elizabeth Rhymes Kurrie. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Merry Jo Parker Kurrie; his son and daughter-in-law, Thompson Kurrie III and Stephanie King Kurrie of Valdosta; his daughter, Lee Shingler Kurrie of Valdosta; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Margaret Williams and John David Williams of Valdosta; his daughter, Merry Parker Whidby of Atlanta; his grandchildren, Thompson Kurrie IV (Cort), John Hadden Williams, Penelope Belle Kurrie, and Ruth Lee Williams, all of Valdosta; his niece, Jennifer Nixon Youngblood of Vienna, Virginia; his brother-in-law, Robert Frank Youngblood of Vienna, Virginia; his sister-in-law Debbie Parker McLeod and brother-in-law Charles McLeod of Valdosta; his mother-in-law, Christine Parker of Doerun; and his Pearson cousins, Wiley H. Pearson, Charles W. Pearson, James C. Pearson, and Mary Frances Pearson.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the Langdale Hospice House, who showed Tom so much care and compassion.

A celebration of his life will be held at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Park Avenue Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 4:00 pm in the sanctuary and immediately following the service.
