Stephen “Steve” Manning, 82, of Valdosta, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. He was born in New York on January 16, 1944, to the late Joseph Manning and Alice Oglowith Manning.

Steve grew up in Islip, Long Island, New York. He later moved to Valdosta to be near the family of his future wife, Georgianna. The couple married around 1970 and built a life centered on friendship, community, and service. Steve was first employed by Lowndes Exterminating and soon afterward began a long career with Valdosta State College.

Steve had a passion for photography and enjoyed traveling with Georgianna. One of their favorite pastimes was meeting friends at Ocean Landings in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Steve never met a stranger. His warm personality, genuine interest in others, and gift for conversation allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life.

Although Steve and Georgianna were not blessed with children of their own, they shared their love and generosity with countless students and athletes at Valdosta State University. They frequently welcomed members of the tennis team into their home, creating lasting friendships and cherished memories. Steve was also active in the community, serving at one time as President of the Elks Club. He was known as a generous and civic-minded man who enthusiastically supported numerous events and organizations throughout Valdosta.

Steve is survived by his brother-in-law, Louis (Debra) Baer of New York; sister-in-law, Barbara Baer of South Carolina; nieces, Aimee Mattiolo and Deirdre Baer; and nephews, Christopher Baer, Matthew Winters, and Brian Manning. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his beloved wife, Georgianna Edith Baer Manning.

A funeral service for Steve will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home, with Father Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
