Shirley Lynette Tyson Dyer passed away on March 2, 2024, at Langdale Hospice House after a lengthy illness.
Shirley was born in Sparks, GA to the late Sankey Booth and Ila Mae Moore Tyson. She was educated in the Cook County School System, graduating from Cook High School. She continued her education at Piedmont School of Nursing where she received her R.N. Degree.
Shirley was a natural caregiver and became a wonderful caring nurse. She began her career at Piedmont Hospital and eventually went to work for Kraft Food Corporation in Atlanta as an industrial nurse. She loved her patients and considered them all family. They returned that affection and appreciated the special care she gave.
After retirement, she was persuaded to move to Valdosta to be near family. These were joyful years as she enjoyed watching her nieces and nephews grow into adulthood. Her neighbors were precious to her and created a close-knit community of support for each other.
Although she had no children of her own, she considered all of her nieces and nephews her own. She was dearly loved by them all.
Shirley always had a special place in her heart for animals, especially poodles. She had several during her lifetime, the last one, Charlotte, gave her such joy.
Shirley was an enthusiastic volunteer at South Georgia Medical Center, a member of Park Avenue Church where she enjoyed the “Grace Dennis Class’. She was also a member of Readers Forum.
In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by three brothers, James Paul Tyson, William Russell Tyson, and Robert Michael Tyson, and two brothers-in-law, Virgil McCrary and Royce Phillips, and a sister Jean Tyson Phillips.
She is survived by one brother, Charles Booth Tyson (Polly), of Bainbridge, GA, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Jackie Tyson McCrary of Valdosta, Polly Tyson Talley and George T. Talley; a sister-in-law, Mickey Faulkner Tyson, of Sparks, and her long-time friend, Pat West, and a wonderful caregiver, Pat Alexander; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm Wednesday, March 13, 2024 in the Park Avenue Church Chapel with Reverend David Tart and Reverend Jimmy Towson officiating. A family burial will be held at Sparks Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1pm until service time.
