Sammy Gene Long, 90, of Valdosta, GA, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 11, 1936, in Bainbridge, GA, to the late Reverend Lee and Ethel Long.
Sammy graduated from Albany High School and then spent two years in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge from the Army, he attended Georgia Southwestern before transferring to Auburn University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and developed a lifelong passion for Auburn football. In 1981, he went on to receive a Master of Education from the University of Georgia.
Sammy spent his career in public service, working as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, Vocational Expert, and Disability Consultant.
Sammy and Sue shared a beautiful marriage, which began on December 18, 1966. Their love and devotion to one another lasted almost 60 years.
Sammy had a passion for fishing, particularly on the Gulf. It was one of his greatest pleasures, and he found peace and joy on the water. He loved passing that joy along, teaching his grandchildren and others to fish off his dock at home, memories they will carry with them always.
At the ripe old age of 60, Sammy made the decision to get his pilot's license. Flying quickly became another passion of his, offering him a fresh sense of freedom and adventure he cherished for years.
Sammy attended Northway Community Church where alongside his beloved wife he faithfully served in the children's ministry. Serving together was a meaningful part of their lives and a beautiful reflection of Sammy's love for God and others.
Sammy was known for his kind and gentle spirit, his generous heart, and his quiet humility. His family was his greatest joy and the center of his world. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather who treasured the time he spent with the people he loved most. Sammy's gentle presence, selfless love, and steadfast faith touched the lives of all who knew him, and his memory will forever remain a precious gift to his family and friends.
Sammy was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Lee Long; his parents, the Reverend Lee and Ethel Long; his brothers, Willis "Bobby" Long and the Reverend William "Billy" Long; and his sister, Annalee Miller.
Sammy is survived by his wife, Sue Phelps Long; his daughter, Laura (Michael) Walker of Valdosta; his grandchildren, Alden Walker of Orlando, Abigail (Trey) Chastain of Valdosta, and Anna Kate (Derrick) Pearson of Valdosta; his brothers, James “Jimmy” Long and Edward “Eddie” (Shelby) Long; and several nieces and nephews.
Sammy's family will miss him dearly, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
We are deeply grateful to Hospice of South Georgia and Miranda for the compassionate care, kindness, and support you provided to our family during such a difficult and tender time. Your gentle presence brought comfort and peace when we needed it most.
Well done, good and faithful servant!
