Valdosta, GA

Romulo Alvarado MD, died on Friday, April 12, 2024, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born in Honduras to Dr. Romulo Alvarado and Lydia Sagastume Alvarado. Dr. Alvarado grew up in Honduras and received his MD from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1963. He went on to receive a Masters in Public Health and Hospital Administration at University Hospital of Caracas in Venezuela before moving to the United States to continue his education. His pediatric residency was completed at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI, a part of the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. His first position was at Mott Childrens Health Center training students, interns, and residents, where he served as an Associate Professor for 9 years. Originally intending to return to Honduras to start a hospital, he instead chose to stay in the states to provide his family with more opportunities. In 1978, Dr. Alvarado moved his family to Valdosta to begin private practice, where he founded South Georgia Pediatric and Allergy Center. He worked hard to improve the quality of care at South Georgia Medical Center for the Pediatrics and the Newborn Nursery departments. He was also instrumental in starting Youth Care, the afterhours pediatric care clinic at SGMC. During his 40 years of medical practice, he always went above and beyond to care for his patients. He was a wonderful father, husband, and friend to all.

Outside his office and the hospital, Dr. Alvarado had a great love for the ocean, spending the majority of his free time at Amelia Island. There he enjoyed swimming, fishing, boating, and especially playing tennis and golf. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Valdosta.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Sandra Navarro Alvarado of Valdosta; three sons and two daughters in law, Alan Joseph Alvarado MD, Paul & Leslie Kennerly Alvarado, and Fernando & Caryn Alvarado DDS, all of Valdosta; a brother, Luis Alonso Alvarado of Honduras, and a sister, Norma Alvarado of El Salvador. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Alex Joseph Alvarado, Matthew Logan Alvarado, Anna Catherine Alvarado, Bennett Joseph Alvarado, Nicholas Gray Alvarado, and Addison Kate Alvarado; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He is preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
