Richard Terrell Stroupe, 82, of Valdosta, Georgia, peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at his home. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to the late Lacy Terrell Stroupe and Willie Mae Spain Stroupe, Richard had an unwavering devotion to family throughout his life.
Richard's life was anchored by his unconditional love for his family and his faith in the Lord. He understood his role as provider and protector. His philosophy was simple, nothing worthwhile comes without hard work, and he was driven to provide for those he loved.
His devotion to his beloved wife, Sylvia “CJ” Wilson Stroupe, exemplified the depth of his commitment to family. Together, they raised four children, instilling the importance of family.
Richard’s professional career was driven by this strong work ethic and ability to implement change. Rising through the ranks with the Waffle House, he ultimately became president of the largest Waffle House franchise, and not content to rest on his achievements, he established his own Waffle House franchise. His leadership style was characterized by high expectations coupled with personal accountability. Richard never asked others to do what he would not do himself. This approach fostered lifelong friendships with colleagues and created a legacy of professional excellence that extended far beyond business.
The natural athletic skills of Richard became evident early on in his life, as an eighth-grader, he earned the distinction of first seed on his high school tennis team, competing successfully against older, more experienced players. This exceptional talent and drive earned him a scholarship to Middle Tennessee State University.
His competitive spirit and athletic excellence continued well into his sixties, where he consistently won tournaments against competitors decades younger.
Beyond the tennis court, Richard found true joy on the water. Navigating his boat or simply enjoying the tranquility of life on the water, these moments provided him with deep satisfaction.
Family game nights held special significance in the Stroupe household. Richard's competitive nature extended to spirited rounds of dominoes, poker, Phase 10, and Tonk, where his strategic mind made him the consistent family champion. Every family gathering included these games and helped create lasting memories.
Richard was committed to serving others beyond his immediate family circle. His giving spirit manifested through anonymous acts of kindness. He often delivered gifts to families in need, supporting his employees, and extending help to those facing difficult circumstances.
His role as papa brought him immense joy. He actively participated in his grandchildren's milestone moments, from graduations to sporting events to taking the time to play games with them.
Richard’s presence provided stability and assurance to multiple generations, establishing him as the family's unwavering foundation. He was a constant presence for his family, there to listen and offer advice whenever needed. Just knowing he was there was a source of comfort for the family, which will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sylvia “CJ” Wilson Stroupe of Valdosta; daughters Dawn Stroupe (Peter Rockwood) of Valdosta, Wendy Chandler (Perry) of Lake Park, Noel Bowen (Joe) of Valdosta, and son Christian Stroupe (Paula) of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania; ten beloved grandchildren: Justin Chandler, Brandon Chandler, Blaine Chandler, Emma Stroupe, Wyatt Bowen, Brooke Chandler, Ava Bowen, Molly Stroupe, Wilson Stroupe, and Everly Stroupe; and great-grandchild Crew Chandler.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first grandchild Perry Ward Chandler Jr., sister Jan Sanford, and brother Jerry Stroupe.
A celebration of Richard’s life will begin with a visitation starting at 10:00 AM with the memorial service following at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 5, 2026, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Pastor Justin Crenshaw will officiate the service.
