The Reverend Peter L. Ingeman, Lt. Col (Ret) USA, 85 of Valdosta, passed from this life to eternity, on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at his home. Born in Chicago, IL on July 22, 1939, Peter was the son of the late Milton Joseph Ingeman and Ellen Agate Stenson Ingeman. He was raised in a military family, growing up primarily in Chicago and Virginia. Peter attended high school in Highland Park, IL where he played tennis. His first year of college was in Munich, Germany where his dad was stationed with the US Army. Returning to the States, Peter attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ where he studied Fine Arts. In college he met the former Happy Plews on a mixed-up double date. On June 17, 1961, Peter and Happy were married in Gloucester City, NJ. Prior to their marriage Peter had begun serving in the United States Army Reserves in North Carolina. He soon began work as an Art Therapist in Raleigh, NC but in mere days his reserve unit activated to Ft. Bragg. He was able to return to the therapist job when his reserve unit deactivated, but the Army asked Peter to go to OT School and made him an officer in a direct commission as 2nd Lt. in the Army Medical Specialist Corps. During his tenure with the Army as an Occupational Therapist, he was stationed in San Antonio, San Francisco, and Germany. During this time, Peter attended Army/Baylor University program to gain his master’s degree in Hospital Administration. He was also the first OT in the Army to go to Command and General Staff College (CGSC). Peter retired from the Army in 1984 and was awarded the Legion of Merit. He had been ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church 2 years prior in St. Augustine’s Church in Augusta. Following his military retirement, he went to Seminary at Nashotah House in Nashotah, WI. There he was privileged to serve as a deacon for the Archbishop of Canterbury and achieved his Master of Divinity. Peter began his ministry as Assistant Rector at Christ Episcopal with Father Henry Louttit and as the Episcopal Chaplain at Valdosta State College. Their next charge was at St. Francis of The Islands in Savannah and he served there for 11 years.
In 2000, the Ingemans returned to Valdosta when Peter became Rector at Christ Episcopal Church. Father Ingeman retired from Christ Church in 2012. The Ingemans remained in Valdosta and Peter served at several other churches in the area. He maintained a lifelong love for art and painted until his health no longer permitted him to do so. Peter was deeply beloved by many in this community and all over the world.
