Mike Hamm, 67, of Dasher, died suddenly on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in Valdosta to the late Ralph & Helen Copeland Hamm, he was a lifelong resident of this area. Growing up Mike attended Georgia Christian School and graduated with the Class of 1975, while in high school, he loved playing basketball and wore #52 for the Georgia Christian Generals. After high school, Mike began a technical education that taught him HVAC and later on Electrical skills. Having worked several jobs as a technician, he took a job at Valdosta State University. Mike worked his way up and soon became the Electrical Supervisor for VSU and worked for 34 years prior to his retirement in 2018. Early on at VSU, Mike met Tammy Schappaugh at work, they started dating and were married on June 6, 1992. Outside of work, Mike loved outside activities such as working in his garden, making cane syrup, fishing and playing golf. He was also an avid fan of NASCAR and the Atlanta Braves.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy Schappaugh Hamm of Dasher; his children and their spouses, Vince & Analiese Hamm of Mayday, Danielle & Mat Berrill of Phoenix, AZ, Cody & Mandy Hamm of Perry, Joielle Hamm of Valdosta and Rhett & Rebekah Hamm of Dasher; nine grandchildren, Milly McDowell, Granger Hamm, Aiden Hamm, Addison McDowell, Sammy Berill, Lynnex Hamm, Tuck Hamm, Tucker Josey and Olle Berrill. Also surviving are three sisters and a brother in law, Patsy & Mike Black, Barbara Bundrick, Linda Guess and a sister in law and brother in law, Kim & Mike Knight, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike is preceded in death by his parents, his parents in law, Jill & Jim Schappaugh and a brother in law, Larry Bundrick.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Dasher Cemetery in Dasher. Michael Black will officiate. The family will receive friends at Dasher Church of Christ Thursday afternoon from 1 until 2:30 pm, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Echols County Schools Drama Program, P.O. Box 40, Statenville, GA 31648.
