Maynard Herring

Maynard Herring, 86, of Valdosta, died on Monday, December 2, 2024 at Fellowship Home. Born in Lake Park to the late Leland & Marie Tomlinson Herring, he had been a lifelong resident of this area. Growing up in Lake Park, he graduated from Lake Park High School in 1956. At a young age, Maynard began helping his father on the farm. On the farm he and his family grew corn, soybeans, cotton, tobacco and hay. After a few years of farming after high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Okinawa as a teletype operator. He then returned to Lake Park and the farm. He did work briefly at Goldkist and then at the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 29 years, all the while continuing to farm. Maynard was a member of Central Avenue Church of Christ. 

Survivors include three sons and daughters in law, Art & Paula Herring of Valdosta, Rich & Suzanne Herring of Mt. Juliet, TN and Ken & Michelle Herring of Columbia, SC; a sister and brother in law, Marilyn & Huron Nichols of Lake Park and eight grandchildren, Grant (& Rose) Herring, Jesslyn (& Brice) Dazey, Mary Welch, Harrison Welch, Levi Herring, Abigail Herring, Jackson Herring and Jenna Herring. Also surviving are two great grandchildren, Liam Dazey and Gray Dazey and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Peggy Wisenbaker Herring and a brother and sister in law, Ealie & Glenda Herring. 

A funeral for Mr. Herring will be held at 11 am on Thursday, December 5, 2024 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Mr. John Klimko will officiate. Burial will follow at Dasher Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening at the funeral home from 5 until 7 pm. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.act.alz.org.
