Mary Jane B. Wetherington, 85, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 21, 1938 and was the daughter of William Howard Bridges and Frances Harrell Bridges. She attended Mercer University and West Georgia College. She was a retired teacher, first for 2 years at St. John's Catholic School, followed by 35 years in the Valdosta City Schools. She loved being an active member of First Baptist Church of Valdosta and a member of the choir for several years.
She leaves behind a long legacy of love, encouragement and compassion, not only from her years of teaching, but also as a testimony of her care and concern for her family, friends, extended families and everyone she met.
Survivors include a son, Earl (Rusty) Wetherington Ill; son and daughter in law, William (Bill) and Davina Wetherington; granddaughter Ava Alyse Wetherington, all of Valdosta; step-daughters April W. and Charles DuPont of Meherrin, VA; Faith W. Stover of Erie, PA; Temple (the late Lowell Hammock) Hammock of Valdosta, GA; a niece and her husband, Catherine and Stuart Moore of Valdosta, GA; a nephew and his wife, Howard and Dawn Slocumb of Fargo, GA; a sister in law and her husband, Benita and Dick Hall of Valdosta, GA; step-grandchildren and spouses, Blake Boswell of Mountain View, CA; Glenn and Holly Boswell of Valdosta, GA; Charlton and Jen DuPont of Virginia Beach, VA; Danielle Anderson of Palm Coast, FL; Jes Stover of Erie, PA; Katie Warren of Erie, PA; Seth and Tara Stover of Erie, PA; Aaron Porter of Waycross, GA; grand-nephews and spouses, David and Ashley Moore of Valdosta; Stephen and Whitney Moore of Ellaville, GA; step-great-grandchildren Loren and Tristan Perry; Wilhemina and Penelope Anderson, Ashlin Winkelmann and Riley Stover, Myles and Aliyah Warren, Nolan and Elin DuPont, Violet and Ivy Boswell; great-grand-nephew and niece, Dawson Moore and Macie Moore.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Earl C. Wetherington, Jr., her parents, William Howard Bridges and Frances Harrell Bridges, sister Susan Bridges Cannington and husband Henry Cannington, and her brother Bud Bridges.
Services for Mary Jane B. Wetherington will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2023 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Chuck Owens, Rev. Dennis Massie and Rev. Ron Hatchett officiating. The burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Carson McLane Funeral Home, 2215 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, GA 31602. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 200 W. Central Ave., Valdosta, GA 31601, or to Hospice of South Georgia/SGMC Foundation, P.O.
