Born in Greenville, South Carolina, on October 19, 1959, Mark was the son of the late Lt. Col. James M. Powell and Mary Jeanne Graney Powell. His father’s military career brought the family to Valdosta in 1967 where Mark attended school at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School. He graduated from Valdosta High School where he excelled at baseball, playing on the 1978 State Championship Team, and was also a member of the Honor Guard. Mark earned a baseball scholarship to Valdosta State College where he played under the leadership of his good friend and coach, Tommy Thomas, garnering the NCAA Division II Championship and placing third in the College World Series in 1983. He was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Order. Mark graduated with a BBA in marketing from Valdosta State. With entrepreneurial spirit, he soon started his own business, Southern Surgical Consultants, Inc., with partners Bobby Roche and Kent Adams, marketing surgical implant devices. His next career move was establishing Premier Consultants where he continued to thrive in medical sales. An avid golfer, Mark enjoyed the game as well as the camaraderie at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club where he was a member. He loved the water with Captiva Island being his favorite destination. He was an excellent chef who enjoyed feeding his family and friends. He had a love for the Catholic faith and was a parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. For over twenty years Mark loved his closest companion, Windy Giddens, to whom he proposed in December 2025.
