LTC Luther Joe Griffith

LTC Luther Joe Griffith, 88 of Moultrie, GA passed away Monday, April 1, 2024. Joe was born on September 4, 1935, in Putman County, WV to Luther Dennis and Alma Griffith. He graduated college from Marshall University in Huntington, WV. He entered the United States Army as an Infantry Leader. Joe served two tours of Vietnam, served in Iran, and Somali. He served as an administrator in the Special Forces. He received several medals including, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Medal of Valor, Army’s Combat Infantry Badge, and many more. He retired in Roswell, GA in 1988 after 31 years of service, He enjoyed continuing his education by attending and graduating for the University of Georgia. He wrote several articles for the North Georgia Journal, enjoyed hiking and he hiked the Appalachian Trail with several of his Army friends. He loved sharing his love of history with everyone who knew him. He will be remembered for his love of family, love of his country, and the pride he showed in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Trips with the grandchildren to Disney will always be a special place in their hearts. He was an honorable man, yet humble and respectful. Joe shared his life stories with everyone around him. 

Joe will be missed by his family, friends and all that knew him. He let everyone around him know just how much they were loved. Our memories will always be something we all cherish.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beulah Opal Auxier, Constance Peterson; and his granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Balbo. 

He is survived by his children, Dana Lynn Conner (Hansford) of Catlett, VA, Alesia Dorminey of Valdosta, GA, Sharon Grimes (Bobby) of Elizabethtown, KY; grandchildren, Michele Redfern (Aaron) of Lake Park, GA, Shannon Watts (Jim) of Lake Park, GA, Aaron Conner (Kealen) of Warrenton, VA, Victoria Hamilton (Chris) of Bealeton, VA, Ashley Diggs (Brad) on Midland, VA, and Tracy Graham of Louisville, KY; seven great grandchildren; brother, Forest John Griffith (Betty) of Fox Lake, IL.

Visitation will be 11:30am – 12:30pm Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd. Pensacola, FL 32504. A Funeral Cortege will depart Harper-Morris at 12:30pm for Barrancas National Cemetery, where a Graveside Service will be held at 1:00pm, with Rev. Ken Griffin officiating and full military honors observed.

A special thanks to the staff who cared for Joe at The Legacy of Regency Park in Moultrie, GA. They showed love, compassion, and respect in his last days of his life, we will be forever grateful for allowing him to feel at home and rest in peace.
