Laurie Hughes passed away peacefully on Monday, August 10, 2026 following an extended period of declining health.

Laurie was born on September 28, 1936 , in Hahira, to George M. and Gladys Barfield Fiveash. She married Jesse Adolph Hughes and together they made their home in Valdosta, where she remained a dedicated community member. Her absence is deeply felt by all who knew and loved her.

She exemplified a life marked by grace, compassion, and quiet strength. She was a loving mother, true friend, and faithful supporter of her community. Alongside her husband, she was a charter member of Park Avenue Church. Following his passing, she gave her time as a volunteer at Hospice of South Georgia.

She had a gift for creating and celebrating beauty. Laurie found joy in painting, reading, gathering with loved ones, repurposing thrifted treasures, and attending local theatre and musical productions. Her love of artistic creativity extended to her work in the Fine Arts and Music Library at Valdosta State University, where she supported the faculty, staff, and students until her retirement in early 2000.

She is survived by her children, Wade Hughes of Valdosta, and Beth (Mark) Schmitz of Carrollton; four grandchildren, Robin (Jared) Middleton of Sandersville, Jason Hughes of Atlanta, Jessica (Jonathan) Waldrop of Decatur, and Matthew (Lindsey Reynolds) Schmitz of Athens; and five great grandchildren, Caleb, Jesse, Laura, Naomi, and Parrish. She is also survived by her siblings, Jim Fiveash, and Janie Hemby. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers John Fiveash and George M. Fiveash, Jr.

Visitation will be held at Carson McLane Funeral Home on August 13, 2026 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. followed by a graveside service at Sunset Hill Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Jared Middleton.
