John J. Fretti, 67, of Valdosta, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025. John was born on April 22, 1958, in Toledo, OH, to the late John Joseph Fretti, Sr. and Dorothy Bonita Hall Roby. He grew up in Toledo and Sharpsville, PA, and was raised by his mother and stepfather, James Roby. He graduated high school in Sharpsville then moved to Valdosta with his family. In Valdosta, he attended and graduated from Valdosta State University in the early 1980’s with a degree in Chemistry and Biology. He started working at Chemical Specialties soon after graduation and worked there for several years until its closure. John met Robin Pope though mutual friends around this time, they started dating and were married on June 21, 1986.
John had the opportunity to purchase All States Moving and Storage in 1989 and continues to operate All States with his family for over 36 years, helping folks, primarily military, begin new lives in Valdosta or go to new opportunities in other locations. John was very active in serving the community, beginning with neighborhood watch on Churchill Drive. He was then elected to Leadership Lowndes in 1997 and served as President in the early 2000’s. John was elected Mayor of Valdosta in 2004, serving until 2011. John was a devoted family man and loved nothing better than spending time with his wife and girls, especially the grandchildren. He was an active participant with the Classic Car Club, Turner Center for the Arts, and The Theatre Guild.
John is survived by his wife, Robin P. Fretti, of Valdosta, daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Kyle Hopkins, of Orlando, daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Joseph Sharp, of Valdosta; his grandchildren, Hatcher and Hattie Sharp of Valdosta, and Mark Alan Hopkins, of Orlando; and his stepfather Jim Roby of North Carolina.
A visitation for John will be held on Sunday, May 25, 2025 from 3-5pm at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Turner Center Arts Children’s Program, https://turnercenter.org/give
