Joseph Glenn Smith, affectionately known as Joe Glenn, age 88, passed away on January 5, 2026, at Fellowship Home Brookside. He was a devoted hospital administrator, business owner, and man of faith who left a lasting legacy of love and service. He was the son of the late Dr. John Raymond Smith and June Parrott Smith and brother of the late John Raymond Smith, Jr. Joe Glenn was a graduate of Riverside Military Academy, Valdosta State College—where he was a charter member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity—and Georgia State University, where he earned a degree in Hospital Administration and completed a fellowship with the American Nursing Home Association. He proudly served eight years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. For 25 years, Joe Glenn was the owner and hospital administrator of Smith Hospital and Nursing Home in Hahira, Georgia. Beyond healthcare, he was also the owner of Joli Art and Antiques in Valdosta. Deeply committed to his faith, Joe Glenn founded the discipleship ministry “Fishermen” of Valdosta and was a devoted member of Park Avenue Methodist Church, where his love for Jesus Christ was evident to all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Marie Converse Smith; their children Missy Smith Kalish (Bruce) of Apopka, Florida; Lang Smith Smotherman (John) of Jennings, Florida; Jolyn Smith of Valdosta, Georgia; and Nancy Smith Rathmann (Randy) of Valdosta, Georgia. He was a proud grandfather to Joseph Glenn Sapp and Max Sapp of Orlando, Florida; Dr. Briggs Smotherman (Mary Beth) and Allie Smotherman Richards (Zack) of Valdosta, Georgia; Lauren Rathmann Eager (Thomas), Hailey Anne Rathmann, Faith Rathmann, and Leslie Cate of Valdosta, Georgia. Joe Glenn also cherished his great-grandchildren John Braxton “JB” Smotherman and Shepherd “Shep” Smotherman of Valdosta, Georgia.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Park Avenue Church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to Fishermen, Inc., 4467 Plantation Crest Road, Valdosta, GA 31602, or to Hospice of South Georgia, 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602, in honor of Joe Glenn’s enduring spirit and commitment to his community.
