Jerry Register Bryant West, 88, of Valdosta, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at South Georgia Medical Center.

She grew up in Statesboro, where she attended school and later began dating her childhood friend, Guy O. Bryant, Jr., known as “Bobby.” The two were married in 1954 and soon started their family. In the late 1950s, Mr. Bryant passed away unexpectedly. After his death, Jerry returned to Statesboro to pursue her nursing education.

While attending Georgia Southern University, she met Hugh Harris West. After graduating, the family moved to Athens so Harris could continue his education, and Jerry began her nursing training at Athens General Hospital. In 1968, after Harris earned his doctorate, the West family relocated to Valdosta, where he joined the faculty of Valdosta State College.

Jerry began her nursing career at Pineview Medical Center, later known as South Georgia Medical Center. Over the years, she advanced to Assistant Director of Nursing and retired in 1997 as Director of Admissions.

She was a devoted member of the General James Jackson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as its Regent. She also enjoyed many years with the Readers Forum and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church. Her greatest joy was her family and the time she shared with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Jerry will be remembered for her strength, grace, devotion to family, and years of caring service to others.

Jerry is survived by her children: son Guy E. (& Amy) Bryant of Valdosta; son Robert (& Kathy) Bryant of North Georgia; son Hugh (& Linda) West of Valdosta; son Jud (& Elizabeth) West of Valdosta; and daughter Amanda (& Andy) Wierling of Atlanta; her sister, Nell (& Bruce) Merritt Caldwell of Valdosta; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Guy O. Bryant, Jr.; her second husband, Dr. Hugh Harris West, Sr.; and her daughter-in-law, Debbie West.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at First Baptist Church, with Pastor Dennis Massie officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro, GA.
