Jerry Leslie Corbett

October 25, 1945 — September 25, 2023

Jerry Leslie Corbett, 77, of Lake Park, GA, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023. He was born on October 25, 1945 to the late Austin and Wynell Corbett. Jerry grew up in Echols County and attended Echols County High School in the 1960’s. He then worked on the family farm, and for 17 years as a machine operator at the Owens Illinois Bag Plant in Clyattville.

Jerry Corbett was a man of family, faith and friendship. He lived his life according to the teachings of the Beatitudes, with humility, gentleness, kindness, tolerance, and patience-most days! But when Jerry leaned forward and said, “Let me tell you something….”, you needed to listen!

Jerry was, above all, a family man. He dedicated his life to the care of his beloved wife Debbie, their children and grandchildren. His actions showed this great love for them. For example, he toiled every year on his Echols County garden, planting and harvesting vegetables for the entire family. He graciously delivered the bounty of his harvest, “freezer ready”, to all his lucky relatives! Now that’s what you call love!

Jerry cared not about traveling beyond the boundaries of his rural roots in Echols and Lowndes County. Everything he loved was right there-family, friends and his farm. He loved to entertain us all with stories of his youth, growing up with his twin brother Terry and seven other siblings. His laughter as he told his stories was contagious! We will all surely miss that laugh! And his stories. And, ok, yes….the Jerry vegetables.

Jerry will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a rock for many, and a man of his word. He will always be remembered for the love and generosity he showed to others. His example of focusing on the really important things in life-family, faith and friendship-is an important life lesson for us all.

Jerry is survived by his wife Debbie Corbett, of Lake Park; his children, Tammy Johnson, of Echols County, Troy Corbett (Pam), of Lowndes County, Ian Jones of Atlanta, GA, Justin Jones (Jeannie) of Valdosta, Britt Jones (Haley), of Dacula, GA; his grandchildren, Jenci Johnson, Sydney Corbett, Marleigh Corbett, Tyler Corbett, Julia Cole, Brianna Cole, Abigail Jones, and Greta Jones; brother Alton Corbett (Mary); sister, Phyllis Suggs (Wayne); sisters-in-law, Dorothy Corbett, and Mary Corbett. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Joyce Corbett, grandchild Jeanna Johnson, brothers Phillip Corbett, Terry Corbett, Buddy Corbett, and sisters, Annette Howard, Shelby Phillips McLeod, Juanita Carter, brothers-in-law Pete Carter and Eddie McLeod.
