Jeanette Plaire Clanton, 89, of Hahira died June 19, 2023, at the Brightmoor Hospice Home after a long, courageous battle with dementia.
Jeanette Plaire Clanton was born September 14, 1933 to Cliff and Reba Plaire. Jeanette, her late husband Leland Clanton, and their son Mike were all born a city block away from each other in Hahira. Her ancestry goes back 7 generations in Hahira.
She was one of Hahira’s first basketball cheerleaders, Jeanette loved school and graduated from Hahira High in 1951, the last class to graduate with 11 grades.
Jeanette was very active in school and worked at the drug store and the Five and Dime store. After graduating, she worked at Smith Hospital until she married Leland Clanton in December of 1952. They moved to Tifton for four years and then spent four years in the countryside of Hahira. They moved back to Hahira in 1961 where she began working for the First State Bank, then Georgia Power Company when they opened an office in Hahira in 1964. She worked at Georgia Power Company until 1992 when she retired.
In 1969, the couple bought The Sissy Shop, a ladies dress shop at 100 S. Church Street. They later opened the Sissy Shop Too, a gift and interior shop in 1995. They operated the two stores for 37 years until they closed in 2007.
Jeanette has been very active in her community throughout the years. She previously served on the Hahira Downtown Development Authority, the Valdosta- Lowndes County Tourism Board, Hahira Housing Authority, and the Honeybee Festival Committee. She is a charter member of the Hahira Historical Society, Georgia Power Ambassadors, and a lifelong member of the Hahira First Baptist Church. She was an inspiration to many and contributed much to the community she loved.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Dianne Clanton of Senoia, Ga; her granddaughter and grandson-in-law Jessica and Travis Cain of Evans, Ga; her great-grandsons, Charles, Caleb, Henry, and Patrick Cain of Evans, Ga; her brother Jim Plaire of Valdosta, Ga and many devoted nieces, nephews, and special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Leland Clanton Jr.; her grandson Perry Michael Clanton, Jr., her sisters, Reginia Dickerson, Mable Credille, Marjorie Plaire, Sara Catherine Plaire, and brother Marvin Plaire.
Funeral Services will be held at 3pm, Saturday June 24, 2023, at the Hahira First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 5-7pm at the funeral home in Hahira. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hahira First Baptist Church.
