Janice Wilson Brown, 86, died February 10, 2014, in her home in Lake Park, Ga. Born on August 26, 1927, she was a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, Fla., until she and her husband moved to Lake Park in 2006.
Janice graduated with honors from the University of Florida with a Masters Degree in Education. She was an educator for 36 years teaching second and third grades at Fishweir Elementary, Wesconnett Elementary, and Oak Hill Elementary where she also served as Curriculum Coordinator. She became principal of Ruth N. Upson Elementary in 1970, serving in that capacity until 1983. Her memberships include Lynwood Christian Church and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Jacksonville, as well as Twin Lakes Presbyterian Church in Lake Park. Janice and her late husband Edwin were active members of the Jacksonville Camellia Society and the American Hemerocallis Society. Edwin hybridized the Janice Brown daylily which received the Stout Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon a daylily by the American Hemerocallis Society. She is survived by her daughter, Janice B. Schert; her son, Edwin Collier Brown, III; eight grandchildren: Tanya (Will) Sykes, Amy Yearwood, Edwin (Patricia) Collier Brown 4th, Brent C. (Danielle) Brown, J. Daniel (Heather) Schert, David Collier Schert, John Michael Schert, Kristin Claire Schert; and eight great-grandchildren. Service of burial will be held in Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd., in Orange Park, Fla. on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Memorial service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014, at 4 p.m. at Twin Lakes Presbyterian Church in Lake Park, Ga. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Twin Lakes Presbyterian Church (229) 244-5079 or Halcyon Hospice (229) 333-5005.
