James Miller Steinberg, Sr.

November 9, 1948 – August 6, 2025

James Miller Steinberg, Sr., aged 76, of Valdosta, peacefully passed away on August 6, 2025, at Langdale Hospice House. Born in Valdosta on November 9, 1948, James was the beloved son of the late David Caswell Steinberg and Bertha Mae Southall Steinberg.

A lifelong resident of Valdosta, James graduated from Valdosta High School in 1968 and pursued higher education at Val Tech, earning an Associate Degree in Marketing. During his lifetime, James worked for Steinberg’s Grocery, Coca Cola, Langdale Ford as a Service Manager, and finally at South Georgia Medical Center until his retirement in April of this year.

James met the love of his life, Teresa Sherwood, during high school, and they were married on April 18, 1970, at First Methodist Church.

A passionate outdoorsman, James loved fishing with his sons, especially at Ocean Pond. He was also known for his remarkable skill in cultivating hydrangeas, which now beautify many parts of Valdosta. His community spirit shone through his active support of Valdosta State University Softball and a yearly spectator of the Outback Riders Toy Run.

James is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Teresa Sherwood Steinberg; his sons and daughters-in-law, James M. “Jamy” Steinberg, Jr. and Karen Steinberg, and William S. “Billy” Steinberg and Dorothy Steinberg. He was a cherished grandfather to Kayleigh (and Cameron) Chavarria, James M. “Jake” Steinberg, III, William S. “Will” Steinberg, Jr., and Dorothy Taylor Steinberg, as well as a proud great-grandfather to Amelia James Chavarria. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Charles Mizell, his brother and sister-in-law, David and Marcia Steinberg, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Carol and Diane Sherwood, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved Yorkies, Ellie and Emma.

James was preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Debbi Steinberg.

A funeral service to honor James’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at First Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Anthony McPhail officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Carson McLane Funeral Home.
