Inurnment
McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens
Starts at 10:00 am (Eastern time)
James "Jim" Johnson, 89, of Valdosta, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. Born on December 17, 1936, in Cypress, Illinois, Johnson County, Jim was the beloved son of the late Wayne Evert Johnson and Helen Marie Randels.
A man of dedication and skill, Jim spent much of his career as a construction supervisor, notably with Tom Hutchinson Construction Co. Among his many achievements, he played a pivotal role in the construction of the Valdosta Mall in 1981. His expertise also contributed to other prominent Lowndes County landmarks, including the Rainwater Center and Lake Park Elementary School. Even after his formal career ended, Jim’s work ethic never waned; he found joy in tending to his yard and lovingly addressing every "honey do" task assigned by his devoted wife, Joanne.
Jim’s early years were marked by determination; while working in a machinist shop in Chicago, he attended night school, continually striving to improve himself. His intelligence, resourcefulness, and perseverance defined both his professional and personal life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Joanne Musgrove Smith of Valdosta; daughter Becky Jo and Michael Mahoney of Valdosta; grandchildren Jessie and Michael Moore of Lake Park, Jamie and Greg Price of Wilmington, North Carolina; great-grandchildren Delaney, Sage, Tristian Dubose, Brooklyn, Noah, Hudson Mahoney, Katelyn, Michael, Jayden, Kiera, Camron, and Courson Moore; as well as great-great-grandchildren Samuel and Dakota. Jim also leaves behind his brother William Wayne and Lynn Johnson of New Lenox, Illinois, along with several nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his son, Mark Dale Johnson, and grandson-in-law Henry Dubose, husband of Jessie.
A private urn committal service will be held at the columbarium of McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. McLane Funeral and Cremation Services are honored to assist the Johnson family during this time.
Jim Johnson’s legacy of hard work, family devotion, and quiet strength will be cherished by all who knew him. His contributions to the community and the love he shared with his family endure as a lasting tribute. www.mclanecares.com
