Haskell Ries Sewell, age 91, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026.Born on November 6, 1934, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Louise M. Gutenko and Haskell Johnson Sewell. Haskell was a proud resident of Valdosta, Georgia for 44 years, where he worked as a dental technician and built a life centered on family, service, and community.Haskell proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Machinist’s Mate Third Class aboard the USS Mitscher during the Korean War. Following his military service, he pursued a career as a dental technician, a profession he dedicated himself to until the age of 82, when he stepped away to care for his beloved wife during her illness.Known for his humor and generous spirit, Haskell was a man who never hesitated to lend a helping hand. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him.Haskell was an active member of his community. He was a Knight of Columbus at St. John’s Catholic Church in Valdosta and served as Fire Chief of the North Valdosta Volunteer Fire Department, roles that reflected his lifelong commitment to service and leadership.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Bette C. Sewell; his daughter, Pamela L. Sewell; his mother, Louise M. Gutenko; his stepfather, Sigmund Gutenko; and his father, Haskell Johnson Sewell.
He is survived by his daughter, Connie Sewell (Ronald Weeks) of Cumming, Georgia; his son, Patrick Sewell (Annie) of Pagosa Springs, Colorado; and his daughter, Marie Nguyen (Adam) of Lubbock, Texas. He is also survived by six cherished grandchildren: Crystal Catoe; Joseph (Allison) Cumbess; Jessica (Jono) Woods; Isobel Sewell; and Clara and Fletcher Nguyen.
A memorial graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, June 20, 2026, at 1:00 pm at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Carson McLane Funeral Home has been entrusted to assist.
Moores Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements in MIlledgeville.
Though he is gone from our sight, he will forever remain in our hearts and in the stories we share.
