Harriett Shierling Becton, 96, peacefully passed away at her Valdosta home on January 23, 2026. Born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, she was the beloved daughter of Charlie Glenn and Laura Stalvey Shierling.
Harriett's life was marked by faith, service and devotion. As a young woman she began her career as a bank teller, where fate introduced her to her late husband, Andrew Bennett “Bennie” Becton. Later, she opened her heart and home to countless children as a childcare provider, earning the endearing nickname "B" that reflected the love and care she brought to young lives.
A devoted member of Crossroads Baptist Church, Harriett found joy in her church family and cherished her ladies' Bible study fellowship and her Sunday School Class. Her faith was evident to all who knew her—she was rarely seen without her Bible close at hand. Her love for family shone through her passion for cooking and hosting gatherings that brought everyone together.
Harriett leaves behind a loving family: daughter Rebecca "Becky" Becton Dulaney and son Stephen Glenn Becton, both of Valdosta. Her legacy continues through grandchildren Whitney Dulaney Byerly (Chris) of Dallas, Georgia, and Bennett Edward Dulaney (Amanda) of Madison, Alabama. She was blessed with four great-grandchildren: Gracie Anne, Allie Christen, and Charlie Haddon Byerly, and Bennie Edward Dulaney. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Betty Becton and Patricia Becton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Andrew “Bennie”, son Andrew Bennett Becton Jr., and son-in-law Reverend Sam Dulaney, brothers-in-law, Alton Becton and Julian Becton.
A graveside service will be held at Sunset Hill Cemetery, on Sunday, February 1, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Carson McLane Funeral Home is caring for the Becton family.
