Harriet Goodson Saunders

July 7, 1920 — April 16, 2009

Harriet Goodson Saunders, 88, of Valdosta entered in to her eternal home on April 16, 2009 following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Saunders was born in Valdosta on July 7, 1920 to the late Doc L. and Flossie Carruthers Goodson. She was a devoted and active member of Northside Baptist Church, until her illness prevented her from attending. She taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. Mrs. Saunders attended Valdosta Women’s College (now VSU) and was a member of the synchronized swim team. While her children were growing up, Mrs. Saunders was a homemaker and was involved in her daughters’ Brownie and Girl Scout troops, dance classes and piano lessons, etc. She volunteered as Pink Lady for the hospital for many years, worked for Lane Renfroe at Chemical Specialties, then worked for Dr. Houston for several years. She enjoyed gardening, reading and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Saunders leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 69 years, Aubrey Saunders of Valdosta, three daughters and sons in law, Suzanne and Andrew Hagen of Villa Rica, GA., Judy and Bill Touchton of Valdosta, Debbie and Mike Kirby of Longwood, Fla., sister and brother in law, Elsie and Nick Nicholas of Valdosta, seven grandchildren, David Hagen of Los Angeles, CA., Laura (Troy) Thomas of Villa Rica, GA., William Ashley, Jr. (Barbara) Touchton of Mauldin, SC., J. Stuart (Katie) Touchton of Greer, SC., Ken (Robin) Touchton of Valdosta, Melanie Kirby of Sydney, Australia and Kyle Kirby of Birmingham, Ala, nephew, David (Connie) Nicholas of Hilliard, Fla., 13-great grandchildren and many other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Sunday, April 19, 2009 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Willis officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church or the Mailbox Club.
