Gwen Cavender Stephens, 84, of Valdosta, died on Friday, March 6, 2020, at her home. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, on June 2, 1935, Gwen was the daughter of the late Mont Lee Cavender and Olive Blanch Underwood Cavender. She worked as an inhouse salesperson for Langdale Forrest Products. A member of First Baptist Church for 50 years, she was actively involved with her church, serving on the Finance Committee and teaching Sunday School. A perfectionist, Gwen was a talented, beautiful, seamstress. She had at one time been a court reporter and legal secretary and was passionate about politics and the law. She loved to read and to write, was an awesome grandmother, and loved time spent at the beach.
Survivors are her husband, William Francis Stephens, daughters, Monti Stephens Bullock and Bart, Sharon Stephens Hawthorne and Ronnie, grandchildren, Heather Hawthorne Phillips and Christopher, Sommer Hawthorne Vaughn and Joshua, Joshua Bullock and Chrissie, Colby Bullock and Megan, and Whitney Hawthorne, great grandchildren, Gaines Vaughn, Hayden Phillips and Cavender Vaughn.
She was preceded in death by brother, Jerrell Cavender, and sister, Eva Cavender Barnett.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Chuck Owens and Reverend Mac Weaver will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. Condolences may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com
