Gerald Spell

January 11, 1951 — June 23, 2025

Hahira, GA

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerald Edward Spell, age 74, of Hahira, GA, who entered into eternal rest on June 23, 2025. A devoted husband, father, and friend, Gerald leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, love for the outdoors, and a heart that was always ready to serve others.

Born on January 11, 1951 to Bill and Jean Spell of Baxley, Georgia, Gerald was a man who lived his life in service to God, his family, and his community. A committed follower of Jesus Christ, Gerald spent countless hours pouring into his local church, New Covenant Church of Valdosta, where he served as a youth leader, small group leader and also as an elder for 25 years. His faith was not just something he spoke about, but something he lived out daily, touching the lives of everyone around him with his joyfulness, compassion, and problem-solving skills. Anyone who called his phone was usually greeted with “Jesus loves you!”

Gerald was also an avid lover of the outdoors. Whether it was hunting, fishing, camping or hiking, he found great fulfillment being in nature. His passion for the outdoors was matched only by his love for the people in his life. He enjoyed many trips exploring the mountains, forests, rivers and lakes, passing down his passion and knowledge to his friends and family. His stories of adventure and the lessons he learned from the wilderness will live on in the hearts of all who shared those experiences with him.

Beyond his love for the outdoors, Gerald had a profound impact on the community. He was employed by Georgia Power Company for 30 years as a senior tech in the IT department. He was also a volunteer with prison ministries, a mentor, and a friend to many, always seeking ways to serve and uplift others. Whether through serving as a jack of all trades, lending a helping hand, or simply offering words of encouragement, Gerald had a gift for making everyone around him feel seen and valued.

Above all, Gerald was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 54 years, Aleta, and a loving father and grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion that will continue to inspire his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Aleta Deal Spell of Appling County; his sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Andrew and Renee Spell of Palm Coast, FL, Nathaniel and Christina Spell of Savannah; his daughters, Grace Spell of San Antonio, TX, and Amanda Dominy of Hahira; his grandchildren, Grayson Spell, Ella Grace Spell, Kaitlyn Jefferson, Isabel Dominy, Cason Spell, and Naliana Spell. He is also survived by his brother, Steve Spell, and his sisters, Jeanette Tillman, Michelle Spell, and Amy Carter. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Spell; his mother, Jean Spell; and his sister Linda Sellers. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all whose lives he touched.

A funeral service celebrating Gerald’s life will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at New Covenant Church of Valdosta. Visitation begins at 12:30 pm, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Jewish Voice Ministries, via online donations at jewishvoice.org.
