George Ashley Allbritton

August 21, 1933 — December 19, 2009

George Ashley Allbritton, 76, of Valdosta passed away Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the Langdale Hospice House. He was born on August 21, 1933 in Lowndes County, a son of the late George Issac and Gladys Minton Allbritton. He graduated from Valdosta High School and served as a radarman on board the USS Floyd B. Parks (affectionately known as the "Fighting Floyd B.") under Cmdr. John J. Foote, during the Korean War.

Mr. Allbritton graduated from the University of Georgia in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Forest Management. He was a member of the Phi Sigma Pi Honor Fraternity and also attended classed at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Valdosta State College (now VSU). He was retired Assistant Chief of Forest Management with the State of Florida and was also an accountant. Mr. Allbritton was a member of the Perimeter Road Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Sylvia T. Einig Allbritton, his daughter, Cynthia Kay Allbritton McCandless and her husband, Harry F. McCandless and their son, his only grandchild, Ian Patrick McCandless all of Valdosta, four sisters and brothers in law, Dorothy and Norman Simpson of Valdosta, Audrey and Silas Kiser of Suffolk, VA., Mildred and James Kiser of Atlanta, Faye and O'Neal Grant of Valdosta, three brothers and sisters in law, William and Betty Allbritton of Forest Park, Wallace and Betty Allbritton of Valdosta and Issac (Ike) Allbritton, Jr. of Valdosta, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and his kitten, who he recently named Lightin' Jill.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm, Wednesday, December 30, 2009 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Baughcum officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
