Gary Lanier Bass, Sr., age 93, of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

Born on January 14, 1933, in Cadwell, Georgia, to the late Ruth and J.M. Bass, he spent his entire life in Georgia. He was a US Army veteran. He graduated from Berry College and earned his master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Georgia. He had a passion for education and taught high-school mathematics in Soperton, Georgia before becoming a mathematics professor at Valdosta State College. Mr. Bass subsequently served as Director of Admissions at Valdosta State College (VSU) significantly improving enrollment during his tenure. He retired in 1983.

Mr. Bass was an avid golfer who enjoyed regular rounds with friends at Valdosta Country Club. He was a founding member of the Whiskey River Club and took great pleasure in caring for the gardens, fishing in the ponds and river, and spending time with his friends on the club’s property along Skipper Bridge Road. He also enjoyed woodworking in his home shop. He dearly loved his family and friends. Above all, he took great pride in living life on his terms and doing things his way.

He is survived by his sons, Gary Bass, Jr. (Martha) of Marietta, Georgia, and Mark Bass (Michele) of Cumming, Georgia; his grandchildren, Jennifer Bass, Justin Bass, Jacob Bass, great-grandson Isaac Lowry; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Linda Nunn; his brother, Robbie Bass; and his son, Jay Michael Bass, and Betty Bass Thackrey. 

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Valdosta State University.
