Evelyn Lawanna Cunningham, 90, of Valdosta, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2025, at her residence following a period of declining health. She was born on October 7, 1935, in Douglas, Georgia, to the late John Bartow and Evelyn Mae Booth Lewis. She spent her early years in Nashville, Georgia, and was a graduate of Berrien County High School. In August of 1956, she married her loving husband, James E. Cunningham. In 1983, she moved to Valdosta, Georgia, where she spent the remainder of her life to be near her family.
Mrs. Cunningham was a loving mother and “Meme” to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She devoted her life to her family and to making everlasting memories with them all. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Cunningham is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Dennis Thomas of Valdosta; her son, James Timothy Cunningham of Lake Park; her grandchildren, Hayley and Brett Hester, Clifton Thomas, and Ashlyn and Wes Warren, all of Valdosta; and her great-grandchildren, Bryant Hester, Ady Hester, Henley Thomas, Madeleine Thomas, Hollis Thomas, Mary Claire Thomas, Parker Evelyn Warren, and Mac Warren. She is also survived by her brother and sister, Wayne Lewis and Gail Lewis.
The family expresses their heartfelt love, affection, and appreciation to Mrs. Cunningham’s caregivers, Linda Smethers, Elaine Gray, and Latasha Head, who are all considered family. They also extend their gratitude to the staff of PruittHealth Hospice, who cared for her so well over the past several years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Cunningham.
A private graveside service for Evelyn Lawanna Cunningham will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Westview Cemetery in Nashville, Georgia. Rev. Tommy Bussey will officiate. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com. Carson McLane.
