Dr. Samuel Devereaux “Sam” Lassiter, 65, of Moultrie, Georgia, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026. He was born on February 22, 1961, in Arlington, Georgia, to the late Dr. Homer Leon Lassiter and Julia Devereaux Smith Lassiter.
Dr. Lassiter is survived by his brothers, Dr. Homer Lassiter, Jr. (Teresa) of Hoover, Alabama; J. Page Lassiter (Daphna) of Moultrie, Georgia; and David W. Lassiter (Lisa) of Albany, Georgia. He is also survived by his nieces, Dr. Katherine Lassiter Cherukuri (Chandramouli) of Hoover, Alabama, and Dr. Anna Lassiter of Hoover, Alabama; his nephews, David W. Lassiter, Jr. of Columbus, Georgia, and W. Ward Lassiter; his aunts, Claire Lassiter and Mary Lassiter Snitch; and his dear friend, Margaret Faison.
Dr. Lassiter was a lifelong learner who demonstrated exceptional academic dedication. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from Mercer University in 1983, followed by his Juris Doctor from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in 1986. He later pursued a distinguished career in education, earning multiple advanced degrees from Valdosta State University, including Teacher Certification in 1995, a Master’s in Educational Leadership in 2000, an Education Specialist degree in 2001, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2010. Notably, he achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA in all of his graduate programs.
Dr. Lassiter began his professional career practicing law in the Southern Judicial Circuit, serving Lowndes and Brooks Counties from 1986 to 1990. During this time, he also served as Municipal Court Judge in Quitman from 1987 to 1990. He later practiced law in the Alapaha Judicial Circuit from 1990 to 1994, where he served as County Attorney for Berrien County.
In 1994, Dr. Lassiter transitioned into education, where he found his true calling. He taught Law and Government at Lowndes High School until 2005, inspiring countless students with his knowledge and passion. From 2003 until his retirement in 2021, he served as an Assistant Principal at several elementary schools, including Moulton Branch, Parker Mathis, Dewar, Lake Park, and Westside Elementary Schools. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to student success left a lasting impact on the communities he served.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Lassiter was deeply involved in extracurricular and volunteer activities. He volunteered with the Georgia Bridgeman Band from 1997 to 2003 and was known for his willingness to support students in every capacity, including serving as a bus driver for games, competitions, and memorable trips to destinations such as Houston, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Disney World; and the Georgia Dome.
Dr. Lassiter will be remembered for his intellect and sharp wit, his commitment to education and public service, and his steady presence in the lives of his family, colleagues, and students.
A funeral service for Dr. Lassiter will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 11am in the Carson McLane Funeral Home Chapel. The family will visit before the service from 10-11am. Burial will follow at 230pm at Crown Hill Cemetery in Albany, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society, Donate Here or Alzheimer's Society.
