Constance (Connie) Mathis

Constance (Connie) H. Mathis, 78, of Valdosta died Monday, February 15, 2016 at her home. She was born on November 10, 1937 in Augusta to the late Harold B. and Louis Sylvester Henderson and had lived in Valdosta since the late 1960's. Mrs. Mathis grew up in Augusta and graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Catholic High School. She attended Converse College and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. Connie met James W. Mathis in Augusta while he was attending the Medical College of Georgia and they were married on June 7, 1959 at the Church of St. Mary's on the Hill in Augusta. She was a devoted wife to Dr. James Mathis for forty four years prior to his death in 2004. She was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and served on the board of the Humane Society. Connie was a lover of all animals.
Survivors include her four daughters and sons in law, Margaret Mathis Niemann and Robert Niemann of LaFayette, Calif., Mary Mathis Caudle and Mark Caudle of Tallahassee, FL, Betsy Mathis Moore and Tom Moore of Cumming, GA., Katherine Mathis Trickett and Eric Trickett of Valdosta; her grandchildren, Courtney Caudle Travers and Brett Travers, Lauren Caudle, James Caudle, Megan Moore, William Trickett and Matthew Trickett; two brothers and a sister in law, Vic Henderson of Blairsville, GA, Col (Ret) Tony and Elaine Henderson of Augusta, GA; her sister and brother in law, Ann and Walter Lampp of Augusta; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James W. Mathis.
Memorial Mass will be held at 1pm, Saturday, February 20, 2016 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. A private burial will be held at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4-6pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society, 307 E.
