Charles Powers, Jr.

Valdosta, GA

Charles Morris Powers, Jr., of Valdosta, GA, died on April 14, 2024, after a long illness. Charlie was born in Tulsa, OK, to Charles Morris Powers, Sr. and Eleanor Lilly Powers. The family moved to Quitman, GA, in 1954, to be near relatives.

Charles graduated from Brooks County High School and Valdosta State College. He worked at the C & S Bank of Valdosta until 1969 when he joined the IBM Corporation in sales until 1973. At that time, he received his Georgia Real Estate License and began his life-long career in real estate development and construction. He also owned several brokerage companies. He was a broker at ReMax. 

Charlie’s love of family and history was the soul of his being. He loved “Dixie” and always whistled it. He loved the South and its architecture, history, people, etc. His family descended from the Raysors and Wades, pioneer families of Brooks County.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jerry McGoogan Powers, of Valdosta; his son, Charles Morris Powers, III, of Hiawassee, GA; his daughter, June Powers Chamberlain (Steve), of Atlanta; his granddaughter, Eleanor Powers of Athens; and grandson, David Charles Chamberlain, of Atlanta, Samantha McLoughlin, of Issaquah, WA.

Graveside services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman. The Reverend Dennis Massie will officiate. In lieu of flowers, a gift in Charlie’s memory may be made to First Baptist Church of Valdosta, 200 West Central Avenue, Valdosta, GA 31601, or Hospice of South Georgia, 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602.
