Charles (Chuk) Russell Holzworth

Charles "Chuk" Holzworth, a devoted educator, veteran, and beloved companion, passed away peacefully on September 3rd, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on March 27th, 1934, to the late John and Anna Stockwell, later being adopted to Robert and Mary Holzworth, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Charles grew up in Beaver, Pennsylvania, and then in Wooster, Ohio, where he nurtured a lifelong passion for learning and teaching. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Geneva College in Pennsylvania, followed by a master’s degree and a professional degree in education from Kent State University, Ohio.

Before embarking on his career in education, Charles served his country with honor in the Army during the Korean War, later becoming the bandmaster for the Ohio National Guard., Columbus. His commitment to service extended into his professional life where he held various roles including as an industrial arts teacher in Fredericktown, OH and civics and history in Wooster, OH., Triway Titan Elementary school principal in Shreve, OH, and Student Dining manager at Wooster College. He was fondly known as "Mr. C" at South Georgia State College, later in Valdosta GA, where his dedication to his students left a lasting impact.

Charles shared thirty years of his life with his loving companion, Mrs. Sherry Stranahan. Together, they made their home first in Punta Gorda, Florida, and later settled in Valdosta, Georgia. Even in his 80s, Charles continued to inspire as a teacher in Sarasota and Charlotte Counties, FL, demonstrating his enduring dedication to education. A man of many talents, Charles was an accomplished musician who played the trumpet and piano throughout his life. He delighted friends and family with his humorous impressions of Victor Borge and sang in numerous church choirs, most recently as a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. He also enjoyed competitive ping pong well in his later years, embodying a vibrant spirit and zest for life.

Charles is survived by his companion Sherry Stranahan of Valdosta, Georgia, and his three sons: Ken (and Debra) Holzworth, David Holzworth, and Eric Holzworth, all residing in Wooster, Ohio. As well as his grandchildren Emily (Grigsby), Dan, Julia, Luke, and Cassandra Holzworth. And three great-grandchildren Zahne, Tzeitel, and Hava Grigsby. Charles will be reuniting with his late infant son Timothy William Holzworth, also his brother, Earl R Stockwell (Lenny Stockwell). He will be missed by family, friends, and especially his two closest friends, Dr. James Shane of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and James Yanayon of Seville, Ohio.

Charles Holzworth’s legacy of service, education, music, and friendship will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

In accordance with Charles’s wishes, he will be cremated, and no public services are planned at this time. Burial will be at the Western Reserve of NE Ohio National Cemetery.
