Betty Jean Lewis

Betty Jean Lewis, 85, lifelong resident of Lowndes County, passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2023. Daughter of the late James S., Sr. and Lois Crosby, Betty was born on October 31, 1937. A graduate of Lowndes High School in the mid 1950’s, she was at the top of her class and a speaker at her graduation. Following high school Betty married David C. Lewis on October 25, 1956 and their marriage was blessed for 65 years until his death last year. Betty worked for Dowling Bag Company for many years before becoming a beautician. She owned her own salon, “Betty’s Beauty Salon”, where she cut and styled hair for her customers for nearly 40 years. An avid Braves fan, Betty loved her grandchildren and enjoyed baking for family, neighbors, and friends. She had been a member of Morningside Baptist Church before moving her membership to First Baptist Church in Lake Park.

Survivors are her children, Alan and Kim Lewis and family of Berea, Kentucky, Ann and Brett Fraiser and family of Valdosta; 5 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; sister, Barbara J. Elsworthy and a brother, Jerry Crosby of Valdosta and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Shirley J. Grace.

A graveside service at Sunset Hill Cemetery will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Robert Dawson will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:00 am until 10:00 am. www.mclanecares.com
