Barbara P. Colby, 90, of Valdosta, Georgia, died of natural causes peacefully in her sleep while in hospice care on March 12, 2024.
She was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1933 to John and Mary Porter. Barbara lived with her parents and sister in Hartford until her marriage in 1954 to Harold Colby. Barbara attended Weaver High School in Hartford, graduating in 1951. She worked for Zaslow Sales in Bloomfield, Connecticut for many years starting as a secretary and finishing her career as the office general manager and Vice President. After retiring she traveled extensively with her husband, Harold in their RV all around the lower 48 states and Alaska. She was an avid and voracious reader, and wrote extensively, chronicling her experiences in journals and in poetry. In 2000, she moved to Ashlar Village, a Masonicare Independent living facility in Wallingford, CT where she lived for 23 years with her sister, Margaret. In 2023 she moved with her sister from Wallingford to Valdosta, GA to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Watts of New Hampshire, son, Steven Colby of Georgia, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
A small private family memorial service is planned. Donations in her memory may be made to the Alice Chapter of the Eastern Star in Hamden, Connecticut.
