Barbara Barrett Burleigh, 74, of Valdosta, died on Sunday, February 09, 2020, at her home. Born in Valdosta on November 28, 1945, Barbara was the daughter of Effie Lee Brown Barrett and the late Earl Barrett. She and her husband traveled with the military during his 21-year career in the U.S. Air Force, raising three children along the way. She had a wealth of knowledge regarding flowers and plants, and her hobbies included gardening, making and painting ceramics, and crocheting. Barbara was very sociable and very well loved in her neighborhood. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. In addition to being a loving mother and homemaker she was a crossing guard for Valdosta Middle School for several years and worked as a Walmart Greeter in the garden section for 14 years. Barbara will be remembered for her sincerely kind words in telling everyone “Have a Blessed Day.”
Survivors are her daughters, Catherine Burleigh Dean and her husband Larry of Valdosta, Belenda Burleigh of Mississippi; son Michael Burleigh, of Valdosta; three grandchildren, Christopher Burleigh of Valdosta, Cliff (Chelsea) Hiers of Clyattville, Alan Hiers of Valdosta; five great grandchildren, Katlynn Burleigh Chaney of Hahira, Maya Burleigh of Lake Park, Brantley Hiers of Clyattville, Mackey Hiers and Alaina Hiers of Naylor; her mother, Effie Lee Barrett of Valdosta; many cousins and extended family members and her beloved Pitbull ‘Precious’. Barbara was preceded in death by her father, and her husband, Hurschel John Burleigh, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Whitt Byram will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Valdosta.
