ALTA SINGLETARY KNOWLES, 69, of Lake Park, passed away Monday, August 31, 2009, at Langdale Hospice House after a brief battle with cancer.
She was born August 27, 1940 in Remerton, a daughter of the late James M. and Chloe Shierling Singletary. Mrs. Knowles was a member of the Lake Park United Methodist Church, and was formerly a member of Remerton United Methodist Church before it was destroyed by fire. She was also a member of Woodmen of the World, the Literary Guild, and O&I Retirement Club. She loved to sing, write, and have a good time.
She is survived by three daughters and son-in-laws, Leslie and Rich Carlson of Durango, CO, Beth and Tim Hines of Valdosta, and Teresa and Tommy Lumpkin of Valdosta; two step-children, Trina and Jim Cobb of Cuthbert, and Mary and Ken Brown of Hilo, HI; fourteen grandchildren, Amber and Rebekah Chatellier, Travis, Justin, Dylan and Hannah Carlson, Lucas Humphrey, Jessica Jackson, Courtney Smith, Blake Lumpkin, Rick and Randy Gaskins, Jay Tulley, and Johnathan Davenport; one great-granddaughter, Morgan Humphrey; one sister and brother-in-law, Nina Grace and Charles King of Valdosta; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Wilson "Pete" Knowles, son, Scott Fairchilds, granddaughter, Pheobe Humphrey, brothers, Russell and Norman Singletary, and sister, Glennie Bridges Mancil.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 12, 2009, at the Lake Park United Methodist Church. Mrs. Knowles' family will receive friends one hour prior to the service time at church. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Hospice of South Georgia/Langdale Hospice House, P.O. Box 1727, Valdosta, GA 31603.
