Alma Imogene Nieman “Jeanie” Nieman of Adel, Georgia, went home to her Lord on October 25, 2024, at the age of 90. Jeanie was born September 13, 1934, in Adel, the second child of Julian Odom and Evelyn Odom Daughtry. She married George Henry Nieman in 1955 in Hawaii, and they remained married until his passing in 2001. Jeanie is survived by daughter Deborah Nieman of Atlanta, sister Billie Taylor, niece Tonya Thompson, nephews George Churchwell and James Davis, and grandniece Stephanie Griffith. Along with her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Christine Churchwell and daughter Shawn Nieman.
Born with a sense of adventure, Jeanie was a tomboy, so it came as no surprise that she enlisted in the United States Air Force and traveled the world. She was able to indulge her passion for basketball, playing in a league for service members. It was there that she met the handsome airman who would become her husband of 46 years. Jeanie loved serving her country, and it was with mixed emotions that she left to raise a family. (Expectant mothers were not permitted to serve in those days). They raised Debbie and Shawn on bases in Georgia, Michigan and Bermuda before returning to southern Georgia when George retired from active service.
Jeanie never met a stranger, and found her calling in customer service, working behind the front desk at the Holiday Inn in Valdosta for 20 years.
George and Jeanie shared a love of gardening, and together they maintained an immaculate yard. They were famous for their tomatoes, but it was Jeanie’s flowers that were most precious to her. She was happiest outside and rarely came in before dark. In her final years, poor health prohibited her from gardening, but even as her memory faded, there was no change in her friendly demeanor and she remained a character until the end. Jeanie is dearly loved and will be profoundly missed.
No services are planned at this time; interment will be at Riverview Memorial Gardens in Valdosta. Care of the Nieman family has been entrusted to McLane Funeral and Cremation Services.
