William Clayton Cothron, Sr.

January 9, 1933 — October 19, 2009

William Clayton Cothron, Sr., 76, of Valdosta, died on Monday at Smith Northview Hospital following a short illness. Born in Lowndes County on January 9, 1933, he was the son of the late George Mitchell and Alice Knight Cothron. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Cothron was a farmer and drove a school bus for the Lowndes County School System for 38 years. He was a member of Redland Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Simpson Cothron, son, William Clayton (Clay) Cothron, daughter, Sheri Garner Lokey, granddaughters, Beth Lokey and Julie Lokey, sister and brother in law, Hilda and Stanley Zipperer all of Valdosta; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Mr. Cothron was preceded in death by a son, John Timothy Garner, three sisters, Mary Cothron, Sylvia Peters, Celia Irene Cothron, brothers, Donald Cothron and Glynn Cothron.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2009, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Jay Watkins and Reverend Brian Gay will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 p. m.
