Shirley Roberts Hunt

Shirley Roberts Hunt, of Valdosta, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2020 at the age of 89, surrounded by her daughters. Shirley was born on September 28, 1930 to the late Mr. James Archibald Roberts and Mrs. Esther Pearsall Roberts of Douglas, GA. She was a graduate of Douglas High School in 1947. Shirley then moved to Valdosta to attend Georgia State Women’s College, now Valdosta State University. Here she would meet the love of her life, Jefferson Wier Hunt. Jeff was from Valdosta and was attending college in Douglas at South Georgia College. The two were destined to cross paths and were later married in 1949. Together, they raised four beautiful daughters. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Shirley was an avid gardener and member of the Amaryllis Garden Club where she won several awards for her floral arrangements. She served the Valdosta community for thirty-one years as a Volunteer Auxiliary at South Georgia Medical Center, known as the Pink Ladies. Shirley was also a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Valdosta.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Jefferson Wier Hunt, and two brothers, Jimmy Roberts and Howard Roberts. Left to cherish the memories of Shirley are daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Terry Stein of Flat Rock, NC; daughter, Leslie Singleton of Bogart, GA; daughter, Esther Hunt of Valdosta; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ben Futch of Lake Park; grandchildren and their spouses, Brooks and Jackie Futch, Pearce Futch, Leigh Futch, Jamie and Lance Fendley, Hunt Singleton, Hollie Singleton; great-grandchildren, Hannah Futch, Hudson Fendley, and Truett Fendley. Her younger brother, John Wayne Roberts also survives her.

The family will host a private memorial service at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of South Georgia Medical Center, 2501 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, GA 31602, or First United Methodist Church, 109 W. Valley St., Valdosta, GA 31601.
