Sammy W. Dees, 54, of Valdosta died peacefully after a lengthy illness on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Langdale Hospice House. Sammy was born on December 26, 1962 in Valdosta, Georgia to the late Carnett Sam and Marjorie Dees. He graduated from Valdosta High School. He graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Speech Communication then returned for his Med in Instructional Technology and a MEd in Library and Information Science. After graduation Sammy worked at Valdosta State University Admissions. He retired after twenty years of service.
A member of First Baptist Church where he was a member Jeanette Coody'S Sunday School Class. Sammy loved the Lord, his church family and faithfully enjoyed attending all services.
Sammy is survived by his aunts, Mary Jane (Phillip) Davis of Valdosta, Georgia, Sylvia Becton of Anniston, Alabama and Marion Copeland of Valdosta, Georgia.
Sammy was an avid memorabilia collector of "Gone with the Wind" and Disney. He has amassed a vast collection of history books with an emphasis on the United States Presidents and First Ladies. He has a complete library of old and new movies and music. Sammy was a member of the Literary Guild, Readers Society and Historical Society.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the Carson McLane Funeral Home from 1:00-2:00 p.m. followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel. Rev. Mac Weaver will officiate. A private burial will be held at Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 200 W. Central Avenue, Valdosta, GA 31601 or to Langdale Hospice House, 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
