Richard Harold Wisenbaker

August 8, 1931 — February 7, 2016

Richard Harold Wisenbaker, 84, of Valdosta, died on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Langdale Hospice House following a lengthy illness. He was born in Lake Park, Georgia on August 8, 1931 to the late Louis Byrd Wisenbaker and Cuba Carter Wisenbaker. In 1937, the family moved from Lake Park, Georgia to the Redland Community of Lowndes County where Harold attended the Redland School and then Clyattville Georgia School. Harold had to miss an entire year of school his second year because of Rheumatic fever, which resulted in permanent heart damage. He graduated from Clyattville High School with honors. He attended Valdosta State College where he was named "Who's Who" in American universities and colleges in 1952 and 1953. He was also the editor of the student handbook. He then went on to attend the University of Georgia and graduated on June 6, 1955 with a BS in education. His first teaching job following graduation was with Clayton County High School in Clayton, Georgia. After one year of teaching, Harold moved to Atlanta and later to Birmingham, Alabama where he worked for Atlantic Steel Company. He attended Georgia State College and graduated on May 28, 1967 with a master's degree in accounting. He moved back to the Redland Community in early 1980 due to problems with his health. Upon his return, he briefly worked as a substitute teacher with Lowndes County and with Coastal Plain's in helping people with disabilities in job placements. In his retirement years, he enjoyed writing in a journal each day recording his own thoughts and clippings from USA Today, the Valdosta Daily Times and magazines of all the sporting events and general news.

Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marian and Frank Johnson of Ocala, Florida and Delita and Bruce Barwick of Valdosta; a brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Goldie Wisenbaker of Valdosta; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Donald Frederick Wisenbaker, Bobby Lewis Wisenbaker and Coretha Coody Wisenbaker, Ivey Wesley Wisenbaker and Gail Coffee Wisenbaker; two nieces, Debra Lynn Barwick and Allison Wisenbaker; three nephews, John Wisenbaker, Alton Wisenbaker and Edwin Wisenbaker.

A graveside service for Richard Harold Wisenbaker will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Dasher Cemetery.
