Paul Newton White

Paul Newton White, 85, of Valdosta died Thursday, October 27, 2011 at South Georgia Medical Center after suffering a stroke earlier in the day. He was born on June 25, 1926 in Lovette, FL to the late James Cullen White and Ruby Rebecca Sellars White. Mr. White served three years during World War II in the United States Army and was a field artillery gunner. He served in Korea and helped build the airstrip in Okinawa. Mr. White served aboard the USS Admiral Hughes and was three days out when the war ended. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church, a shriner, a mason and a member of the Azalea Lodge. He went to work with the city of Valdosta after leaving the railroad because he did not want to travel. He wanted to be with his family. He began his career with the city mowing grass at the airport, driving the street sweeper and tractors at the landfill and then became the street superintendent. He retired in 1990 after 37 1/2 years with the city.
Mr. White is survived by his wife of 66 years and childhood sweetheart, Anna Blanton White of Valdosta, two daughters and one son in law, Martha Findley of Lake Park, Rena Alice Hutchinson and her husband, James of Valdosta, four grandchildren, Charles Jerome Findley of Statenville, Paul Bryan Findley and his wife, Claudia of Lake Park, James Jason Hutchinson and his wife, Kate of Gainesville, FL, Justin Alan Hutchinson and his wife, Nicole of Tifton, nine great grandchildren, Dylan Hutchinson, Frazier, Jennifer, Emma, Brayden, Brandon, Brad, Blake and Megan Findley, one sister, Mary Ellen Monk of Lakeland and one brother, Thomas White of Richmond Hill, GA. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, W. J. White and three sisters, Clara Mae Covington, Dallas Vann and Corine Terry.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29, 2011 at eleven a. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Stanley Luke officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
