Michael Harbin

March 21, 1955 — November 15, 2005

Michael Harbin age 50 of Valdosta since 1986 and formerly of McRae, died on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Born on March 21, 1955 in McRae, he was the son of J. H. Harbin, Jr. of McRae and the late Josephine Camille Nairn Harbin. He received his AA at Middle Georgia College in 1975 and his Bachelors in Fine Arts in 1977 at Valdosta State College. He received his Masters in Fine Arts at Florida State University in 1984. Since 1986 Mike was the assistant professor of the Theatrical Department in Communication Arts at Valdosta State University where he had served as Technical Director, Lighting Designer, Scenic Designer, and Production Manager throughout his career there. He was a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology and a member of the Alpha Psi Omega Fraternity. He was a member of the faculty when the VSU Theatre Program received the 2001 Regents’ Teaching Excellence Award. Mike was also technical advisor to numerous community groups in Valdosta and surrounding areas and served as President of the City Pool League.

Other survivors are two sisters and one brother-in-law, Deborah Harbin of McRae, Michelle and Brad Barrett of Reynolds; one brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Evelyn Harbin of Savannah; nieces and nephews, Jeremy and Gillian Harbin of Savannah and Hunter and Olivia Barrett of Reynolds.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 2005 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Carl M. Cates officiating. Mr. Harbin will then be cremated according to his wishes. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made payable to VSU Foundation, for the Mike Harbin Memorial, VSU Theatre, AAttn: Duke Guthrie, Area Head, Valdosta State University, 1500 North Patterson Street, Valdosta, GA 31698-0120 for VSU Theatre Scholarships.
