Merle Downing

Merle Downing, 89, of Valdosta died Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Lakehaven Nursing Home. She was born on August 12, 1928 in Valdosta, Georgia, a daughter of the late Clifford Alva Webb and Neita Milton Webb Cook and had lived in Valdosta for many years. Mrs. Downing was a member of the Northside Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and retired from Southern Bell Company.
Survivors include her son and daughter in law, Michael (Doc) and Rebekah Downing of Hiram, GA; her daughter, Laura Gard of Valdosta; her granddaughter, Sydney Ray of Marietta, GA; two sisters, Martha McCabe of Valdosta and Mary Griffin of Gainesville, FL; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Downing; her brother, Milton Webb and her stepfather, T. L. Cook.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Saturday, April 21, 2018 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Willis and Dr. Gary Woods officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:30am-11:00am at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
