Mary Nan Wakefield, 86, of Valdosta died on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at her home following a period of declining health. She was born on October 10, 1932 in Stratford, Texas to the late Wilbur and Ruby Mae Aduddell Davis. She had an outgoing personality and it was said that she never met a stranger. She was a people person who showed a genuine interest in those she came in contact with and she cared about each and every one of them on a personal level. She was the owner/operator of Nan’s Restaurant for 10 years and then she moved on to become the Director of the American Cancer Society for the Southern District of Georgia. Mary Nan was a member of First Christian Church of Valdosta.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Thomas Edward Wakefield of Valdosta; a son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Amanda Wakefield of Lowndes County; four daughters and sons-in-law, Kim Clayton of Valdosta, Karen and Michael Suttle of Atlanta, Tonia and Bruce Walker of Lake Park, Teresa and Phillip Bishop of Atlanta; a son and daughter-in-law, Truett and Sonya Wakefield of Daphe, Alabama; grandchildren and their spouses, Lacy Wakefield, Amber Wakefield, Andrea Wakefield, Travis Clayton, Erin and Ben Harvey, Megan and John Gallegos, Kellie Tinley, Stacie Studstill, Camryn Studstill, Rachael and Jake Garner, Leah and Justin Roberts; nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Kent Wakefield and three siblings.
Services for Mary Nan Wakefield will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church with senior minister Mr. John Chick officiating. A private family committal will be held later at the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to First Christian Church of Valdosta. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
