Mary Ellen (Hill) Lokey

July 19, 1909 — October 26, 2009

MARY ELLEN (HILL) LOKEY, 100, of Valdosta, went to be with the Lord after a brief illness on Monday, October 26, 2009 at South Georgia Medical Center.
She was born July 19, 1909, near Tuscaloosa, AL, a daughter of the late Thomas Edward and Annie Richardson Hill. On March 23, 1929 she was united in marriage with Felton Marion Lokey. Mrs. Lokey was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She retired after 42 years from Strickland Cotton Mill, where she was a spinner. Anyone that knew her, knew that next to the Lord, she loved her children and family more than anything. She was proud to have raised them in Remerton, where she taught them that a good name (character) was to be valued much more than monetary or physical assets that may be acquired.
She has been a resident of the Baptist Village Retirement Center in Lake Park for the past two years, and she has enjoyed living there and often stated how wonderful it is and how good the staff was to her. She has many friends there and loved to share with them how proud she is of her family.
"Big Mama" is survived by six children: daughter, Ruth Ethel Lokey Downing of Green Cove Springs, FL, son and daughter-in-law, Horace Felton Lokey and Bobbie of Orlando, FL, son and daughter-in-law, K.L. (Ken) Lokey and Earlene of Valdosta, daughter and son-in-law, Nellie Irene Lokey Stokes and Albert L. of Valdosta, daughter, Mary Frances Lokey Jones of Titusville, FL, and son and daughter-in-law, Terry Lee Lokey and Phyllis of Valdosta; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Daughtry and husband Woodrow of Leesburg, GA, and Nettie Willis of Albany, GA; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; step-mother, Sara Mathis Hill; daughter, Juanita Marion Lokey Courson; three sons-in-law, James Buford Courson, Alex C. (Neal) Downing, and Don Jones; two grandchildren; two brothers, Benton and Willie Hill; sister, Fannie Lee Morris; and two brothers-in-law, Otto Morris and J.D. Willis.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Lokey will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, October 29, 2009, at the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home, with Rev. Timothy Downing and Rev. Gene Wisehart officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
