Mary Elizabeth Houston Dickey

May 17, 1915 — July 1, 2006

Mary Elizabeth Houston Dickey, of Valdosta, died on Saturday July 1, 2006 following a brief illness. Born on May 17, 1915 in Thomasville, to the late Lewis Cass Houston and Gertrude Remington Lloyd Houston, Mrs. Dickey attended public and private schools there in Thomasville. She also attended Washington Seminary in Atlanta, Texas Christian University and other colleges in Texas, pledging Chi Omega Sorority. She was a lifetime member of the Valdosta Junior Service League, a sustaining member of the Mystery Club, a member of the DAR, a member of the Valdosta Country Club, a former member of the Child Welfare Clinic, a former board member of the Lowndes County Cancer Society, a Pink Lady and a member of the Town & Country Garden Club. Mrs. Dickey was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. James Harrison (Mary) Gray, Jr. of Valdosta; a son, Marvin Hamilton Dickey, Jr. and his wife Lyn, of Valdosta; five grandchildren, Virginia G. (Jenny) Hough and her husband Glenn of Mt. Pleasant, SC, James H. (Beau) Gray, III of Valdosta, Mary Jacquelyn Dickey and Hamilton Langdale Dickey, both of Atlanta, and Harley (Lee) Houston Dickey, of Athens; one great grandchild, William Remington Hough of Mt. Pleasant, SC. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Hamilton Dickey, Sr.; a daughter, Virginia Arkwright Dickey; a son in law, James Harrison Gray, Jr. and a sister, Virginia Houston Bradshaw.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 3, 2006 at Christ Episcopal Church. Father Peter Ingeman and Deacon Patricia Marks will officiate. A private graveside committal will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at her daughter's home at 2410 South Forty Road in Valdosta on Sunday evening from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 1521 N.
