Marjorie Voltz

Marjorie Hightower Voltz was born April 25, 1933 to Carroll Smith and Lillie Moore Hightower in Thomasville, Ga. At an early age her family moved to Valdosta where they lived in the house her grandfather built. She worked on the family farm alongside her parents, brothers and sisters.

Mama met the love of her life, Gerald Neil Voltz, on a blind date while working at Olmstead Air Force Base in PA where he was a young airman. It wasn't long before her "Jerry" was transferred to Japan. Daddy wrote and asked for her hand in marriage. It took a while to get through all the red tape but these two were destined to be together. She flew to Japan and Daddy had everything lined up to be wed and they began a lifetime partnership and love affair which bore them 5 daughters - Diane & Mac McIrvin, Debi & Brett Cantrell, Donna & Chuck West, Denise & Andy Perkins and Stephanie Voltz.

The Air Force sent them to several duty stations but his last assignment was Moody Air Force Base where they made Valdosta home. From that home they raised their 5 daughters who blessed them with 7 grandchildren (Micaiah Barajas, Shaun & Allison Cantrell, Erin & Mark Mullis, Gretchen & Scott King, Gerald, Gabrielle and Gunther Perkins) 8 great grandchildren (Alex, Marcus and Mia-Rae Barajas, Gabe and Kylin Cantrell, Abigail and Matthew Mullis, and Maggie King)

Mama had a joy of cooking and loved to feed a table full of people. She had a talent for sewing and made most of her daughters and grandchildren’s clothes. She had a green thumb and could grow most anything. Mama had a stubborn streak a mile wide but fiercely loved her family. She was the hardest working woman and fought a mighty 40 year battle with the Bahia grass in their yard until Macular Degeneration took most of her sight. At that time she was unable to do the things she loved the most-cooking, sewing and crocheting.

Mama passed away suddenly at SGMC on Wednesday, August 17, 2022. In addition to her immediate family, she is also survived by her brother John and Mary Frances Hightower, her sister Ruth and George Smith and her many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mama was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years and siblings Anna Pearl Nell, Ida Lou Carter, Catherine Cowart, B.S. Hightower, Ed Hightower and Clyde Moore.
